Project overview
The Tamil Nadu government commissioned AVIPRO Technologies to transform a heritage museum in Chennai into an immersive, technology-driven cultural destination. The project centred on four gallery spaces, each dedicated to a different era of Tamil history, with the centrepiece being a 360-degree projection dome capable of transporting visitors into recreated historical environments.
The challenge
The museum building is a protected heritage structure, meaning no permanent fixings could be made to walls, floors, or ceilings without approval from the Archaeological Survey of India. All projection and audio equipment had to be mounted on custom free-standing rigs. The content — hours of historically accurate 3D animation — had to be produced in parallel with the installation, requiring tight coordination between AVIPRO's technical team and the content production house.
Our solution
AVIPRO designed a bespoke free-standing projection rig system using powder-coated steel frames that distribute load across the existing floor without any wall or ceiling fixings. The 360-degree dome uses 6 Christie laser projectors with edge-blending software to create a seamless 8K panoramic image. Interactive exhibits use capacitive touch overlays on museum-grade display cases, allowing visitors to explore artefact details without physical contact. A spatial audio system with 24 speakers creates an enveloping soundscape for each gallery.
AVIPRO solved what we thought was an impossible brief — creating a world-class immersive experience inside a protected heritage building. The result has drawn visitors from across India and received national media coverage.
